We have a strong focus on supporting traditional skills, and the majority of our range is handmade in Indonesia and India by skilled local independent artisans using traditional production methods. Much of our range is hand weaved with natural fibres or made from solid wood. Our suppliers have become true friends, and many have been with us since the creation of Za Za Homes.
This personal handmade touch allows many of our products to be unique and individual, meaning that there won’t be any two of the same in the world, and we value the uniqueness of a handcrafted piece over a mass produced item from an assembly line.
Sustainability is also very important to us, we do our best to make sure that our products come from sustainable sources, are FLEGT certified, and that the wood is sourced from legal regulated government plantations.
Mango wood – A slightly darker wood which has beautiful grains and natural patterns. Many of our lanterns and also furniture have been handmade with Mango wood, a hardwood, which is fundamentally the by-product of the much loved Mango fruit.
Mango trees grow and mature very quickly in comparison to many other trees, reaching full productivity and maturity in roughly 15 years. The mango plantations will only harvest the trees for wood when the fruit stops growing or when the trees reach their maximum growth point. Once this is done, new trees are then planted in their place. Mango trees are therefore readily available; a by-product to mango fruit and thus eco-friendly and sustainable. A huge benefit is that this provides further jobs and income for the farmers plus an affordable, good quality material for the manufacturers.
Suar Wood – Suar, is another very durable hardwood which produces a very unique, rustic style. The colours and grains within the wood are simply stunning and each piece of furniture created will be unique. This is another fast growing wood which is replanted to grow new trees. Therefore suar is non endangered and sustainable.
Teak – Another hardwood with a beautiful organic structure. Many of our pieces from the garden furniture range are made from solid teak wood. Teak is very hard wearing and great for both indoor and outdoor use.
Our teak wood is sustainably sourced from legal, regulated government plantations, with suppliers being FLEGT certified, this governance complies with the requirements of the EU Timber Regulation (EUTR), therefore coming from a renewable source and farmed to produce a sustainable supply.
Wicker – Our range of wicker products, and wicker accessories, including seagrass and waterhyacinth are all natural plants grown in the water so are therefore highly eco friendly and sustainable materials. Read more about these in our blogs here.
