• How do you host the perfect Easter?

Hosting the perfect Easter blog image with Easter table decorations, plates and cakes

After a very wet and dreary winter we turn our attention to the spring, and the light and warmth we hope it will bring. It’s a time for coming together after the cold and damp start to the year, and what better way to celebrate than a holiday to commemorate the coming of spring? Easter is all about family and friends, and whether you celebrate for religious reasons, being thankful for loved ones, or simply hope a certain bunny will pay a visit, Easter is the perfect excuse to come together and celebrate with those close to you; and what better way than with a dinner party? Although it can seem like a lot of work, it doesn’t have to be, and today we’ve got some handy tips to share with you for the perfect Easter gathering.

Prepare your Easter celebrations in advance

If you’re anything like me then just the thought of creating a social gathering can make your head spin. Don’t let the big day sneak up on you and make sure you plan your gathering or dinner party well in advance. Create a list and consider things like who’s going to attend, what they are going to eat, and what decorations you might use. This also gives you plenty of time for shopping for ingredients and Easter decorations.

How to create the perfect Easter feast

Traditionally Easter was a time where families came together to share a meal of thanks, and no matter whether you’re religious or not, Easter is the perfect time to share delicious food with loved ones. Easter also gives the perfect excuse to serve traditional dishes for the holiday; whether it’s a delicious shoulder of lamb, a warming veggie bake, or a yummy Simnel cake; there are so many great options for sharing food with the ones you love; just don’t forget to think about each person’s requirements such as allergies and preferences. Finish the meal off with traditional Hot Cross Buns! Family recipes are great too; what better way to impress your guests than with a hundred year old recipe?

The dinner table itself should not be ignored, and we have a whole host of table and home accessories, tableware and serveware to help you out. Serve your favourite dishes and Easter cakes in style with a beautiful serving board, and use candlesticks, tealight holders and even small lanterns as table centrepieces. Placemats and coasters will help keep your dining table looking lovely too, as well as adding an extra level of pizazz to your Easter meal. Use natural Spring time foliage and Daffodils from the garden in your displays; just make sure to keep them away from any naked flames. Why not use a decorative vase with artistically shaped twigs that when combined look like a tree? Hang Easter decorations from them and give your Easter dining table a festive feeling.

    Create a festive Easter atmosphere

Speaking of an Easter feeling; it’s important to remember that it’s not just about the dining table. Easter is a time of new life and new beginnings, and often involves flowers. Decorate your home with beautiful fresh flowers from the garden, in vases or even jam jars that can really add colour and vibrance in the home. For extra ambient light, why not consider a candle lantern or two? Candles and candlelight have been proven to help lower stress and aid relaxation, and are perfect for dotting around the rooms you’re using for your festive gatherings this Easter. You don’t have to use candles though; why not use fairy lights in a lantern instead? Fun things like Easter decorations are great too, and look lovely when mixed with flowers.

How can I make Easter more fun?

Easter is a big time of the year for children, and any parent will tell you that keeping them entertained is one of the most important parts of the day. Think about games and activities that they can enjoy, and there are a couple of fun things you can find HERE. If the sun is shining however then why not take the fun outside with an Easter Egg Hunt. Simply hide small eggs, gifts or tokens around your garden or outdoor space and let your young ones find them. Be sure to give a prize for the one who finds the most!

The garden definitely shouldn’t be overlooked at Easter. If it happens to be a nice day then why not take the event outdoors and make it a garden party. Use an outdoor dining table to set up your spread, and why not use other garden furniture too for guests to enjoy whilst the little ones are off egg hunting? If you’re planning on taking the celebrations into the evening then a fire pit can be a great way to keep warm; why not toast marshmallows or delicious smores, or even those yummy hot cross buns? Light up your outdoor spaces with garden lighting too, and really make it a magical Easter scene. Whether you like the flicking frame of an oil torch or lantern, or prefer the soft glow of solar lighting dotted around, there is certainly something to please all as the festivities go long into the evening.

    Don’t forget to enjoy yourself

Most importantly though, whatever you decide to do make sure you don’t forget to have fun. Easter afterall is about spending time with friends and family and having fun with those you love, and your loved ones are sure to love the effort you’ve made. Enjoy their company, and don’t sweat the small stuff as you celebrate Easter in your own style. We hope that these ideas give you lots of inspiration, and all from us at Za Za Homes wish you a lovely Easter.

  • Valentine’s Day Romantic Lighting

Valentine's Day table setting with brass candlesticks and candelabra, on a white dining table cloth

It can be difficult deciding what to do for the one you love on Valentine’s Day; whether it’s making the date night extra special, buying the perfect Valentine’s gift, or even planning that all important proposal. Making it memorable is often the goal, and since the Pandemic many of us have turned to celebrating at home for a variety of special occasions, so why not get creative this Valentine’s Day and devise an evening that your partner, friend or loved one will remember for years to come?

One of the simplest ways to do this is with a technique that has been used since the dawn of time: candlelight! Create a beautiful and romantic atmosphere simply with the power of a flickering flame. The soft, warm hues created from a lit candle has been proven to relax us and help us unwind, and is simply the perfect final touch to any romantic evening. Scented candles also have the ability to please our sense of smell, which can transport us to many different places without leaving the comfort of our own homes.

    Candles in the Home

A great way to display candles and candlelight is through candle holders and candlesticks. Coming in a range colours, designs and periods, there is certainly something that you’ll love; whether it’s a classic candelabra on the dining table, or smaller wooden or metal candlesticks placed on the mantelpiece or shelves, ready to cast their beautiful, romantic ambience into the surrounding room; simply put on some soft music, pop open some bubbly and let the rest happen naturally. Placing candles in front of a mirror projects the light into the room further as it reflects off the glass, so always consider your candle placement carefully to ensure maximum impact! If you’re not in the mood for romance however, then why not invite some friends over for a cosy night in?

Why not add a larger wooden candlestick or glass votive as part of a spectacular table centrepiece? Add natural or artificial foliage that adds the WOW factor to your table setting, and impress them before they’ve even had a chance to sit down. Just make sure you keep any foliage away from those naked flames…

    Candlelit Bathroom

Another romantic idea is a nice relaxing soak in the tub; what better way to wash away the aches and pains after a long day, and in the company of the one you love? Glass tealight holders and small lanterns are simply perfect for this, as they maximise your romantic lighting, whilst being protected from water splashes and condensation. Why not line several either along the bath or on the windowsill? All you need then is the bubble bath.

    Candle lanterns

Candle lanterns are another great way to get romantic lighting into your home. Make a statement in stunning silver, beautiful wood or classic copper; there are simply many ways that you can use indoor lanterns to create the perfect magical ambience for your romantic evening. Why not use them in an alcove to light up a corner of the room, or place them up the stairs along with rose petals to light your way? Metal lanterns are sure to sparkle when the light reflects off them, and wooden lanterns will add a calming element to whichever room they sit. The twinkling lights are sure to set the perfect mood for the both of you.

    Taking the Romance Outside

There is absolutely no reason why your romantic evening should be limited to indoors. Stay toasty warm around a fire pit whilst you toast marshmallows and drink hot chocolate as you snuggle up in a cosy blanket and gaze at the stars above. The cold air is the perfect excuse to wrap up together! It’s also great for spending time socialising with friends. Why not add extra mood lighting with an oil lamp or two around your seating area, along with oil torches further back to add extra height in the garden. Create the illusion of fireflies around you as you relax in each other’s company. You can also use solar lighting as an alternative; simply using the power of the sun to charge they require no wiring to the mains or cost anything to run, and are a great eco idea for your outdoor romantic lighting needs. Place stake lights in the ground around your seating area, or string up fairy lights in trees and on trellising for maximum romantic impact.

However you choose to celebrate Valentine’s Day, say it with candlelight, and create the perfect romantic setting that they’ll remember for years to come.

  • Decluttering the home

Woman putting away clothes on wooden clothes rail. Decluttering the home

With Christmas now firmly behind us, and January well into the swing of things, it’s often a great opportunity to turn our attention to spring cleaning and decluttering the home. Often we find that we have an overflow of gifts, homeware, clothes and festive paraphernalia that we don’t know what to do with, but seem reluctant to throw out. However tempting it may be to let things pile up, we shouldn’t treat our homes like a warehouse, so what better way to celebrate the New Year than by taking out the clutter, and making our homes feel fresh and new, and ready for the warmer days ahead.

    Clearing out the wardrobe:

Clothes can often be one of our biggest problems, and many people will simply keep an item of clothing just in case they might need it one day; you never know if those old jeans will come in handy if you decide to paint a wall, or whether you’ll finally be able to wear that dress to a fancy dinner party. However, a good rule of thumb is that if you’ve not worn something in over a year, then you’re probably not going to do so again, so why not get rid? Whether you’re using a wardrobe or clothes rail, or prefer wall hooks for those smaller spaces, using this rule is a great way of keeping on top of your clothing and making sure your storage isn’t bursting at the seams!

    Boxing things up:

Keep a box or basket in your wardrobe and whenever you look at an item of clothing that you’re unsure of, or items that you’ll “wear eventually”, put them in the basket and leave it there. Once the basket is full, bag the contents up and take it to your local charity. If you haven’t missed it whilst it’s in the basket, then I’m sure you won’t once it’s gone. Also, why not try a “one in, one out” rule. Whenever you buy a new item of clothing, dispose of an old one as a replacement. That way you’ll never have more clothes than you need. This idea needn’t be confined to just clothes, and can be used for other homeware and electricals too.

    Sorting out the sideboards:

When emptying sideboards or cupboards, be sure to empty everything out before you start sorting. It’s important to get to the very back of the space as it’s the items at the back that you’ll have likely used less, or not at all. Again if you’ve not used it, or even forgot you had it, then it’s probably best to get rid. Only put things back when you’re sure you want to keep them; you can always make piles on the floor until you’re sure! If you’re storing food, also treat your storage like you would a shop; place the items with shorter dates at the front so that they’re used first.

    Into the bathroom:

The bathroom is another room that people often put off sorting and tidying, and there are plenty of ways that you can help beat the clutter without compromising on space. Why not use a bathroom unit with handy storage space to keep all your toiletries so that they are out of sight and not around the bath, shower and sink. There’s nothing worse than waking up in the morning, walking into the bathroom and finding a mess everywhere… Also consider bathroom storage such as towel rails or ladders to keep your towels handy but out of the way, and keep only enough in the house that you actually need. Baskets are also very useful for storing dirty linen and clothes.

Make the most of your space:

Keeping the home tidy is often a top priority for people, and bulky items can easily get in the way. A good way round this is to use a nest of tables that can be stacked when not in use, and placed in part of the room that’s out of the way, thereby giving you more room to live comfortably. In the same vein, side tables and our magazine racks with shelving are other handy space saving storage ideas to help minimise the mess and make your room feel fresher and less cluttered.

Whatever you do, remember that the idea of decluttering is to make your home easier to clean, have less to organise, and ultimately give you that little bit less stress in your life. When deciding whether to get rid, consider if the items are; practical or useful to have, do you have sentimental value, do they bring joy to the home or are you keeping it just for the sake of it? Consider these questions with each item you look at, and ultimately ask the question “would I buy that?” If you’re still unsure, then maybe that’s all the evidence you need to get rid and start again. You’ll feel better for it, and happy in the knowledge that you’ve achieved your New Year goals of decluttering…Then you may dare to consider that you could have also made some space for a special NEW item.

  • Candlelight for the winter season – Top tips

Woman standing over dining table with candlelight; wooden candlesticks and metal candle holders, with white wicker placemats and coasters. Candlelight for the winter season

Christmas and the festive season is an important time for many people; whether as a religious celebration or as a special time to spend with family and friends, it is an important date in the calendar that lots of us enjoy. Arguably one of the most important and also fun aspects of any festive celebration is the mood lighting…

Candles and candlelight have been used for centuries around Christmas time, as a symbol of the Star of Bethlehem, and whether you’re religious or not it’s hard to argue with the warm, cosy and calming effect that candlelight creates on a dark winter’s night. An instant mood changer, candlelight makes any space feel welcoming to visitors, and what better way to make your guests feel at home than with the power of a flickering flame. Of course candlelight isn’t just limited to the festive season; light up your home in the dark depths of winter and feel cosy and warm.

    1. WOW your guests

Use candle lanterns and candle holders in the hallway to impress your guests the moment they step through the door out of the cold, and help them feel relaxed and welcomed into the home. Place stainless steel lanterns up the stairs, and the stepped effect will allow the flickering flames to reflect off the shining metal and add a sparkle to your hallway. For a more natural looking effect, also consider wooden lanterns that create the perfect classic Christmas feeling. Why not cluster smaller tealight lanterns on a side table, carefully adding winter greenery around them to create the perfect festive vibe! Consider pieces of fir tree, holly and pine cones, whilst taking care to keep them well away from any naked flames.

          2. Candlelit dining

Arguably one of the key features for any winter celebration is the dining table, where everyone gathers for good food and great company. A traditional must have to any family gathering, candlesticks and votives create the perfect ambience, as well as creating a spectacular focal and talking point for your guests and family. Again, use foliage to create stunning table centrepieces by surrounding a tall wooden candlestick, or by using smaller metal candlesticks to create height and depth. Scented flowers and plants are also great for creating soft smells and aromas for your guests to enjoy.

Alternatively use a garland of festive greenery that runs the full length of the table, with beautiful candlesticks placed along the lengths. Just be sure that they are low enough to allow your guests to still see each other. Finish with carefully chosen placemats, coasters and serving boards that match your theme. Wooden serving boards are great for a natural, classic winter theme, and complement them with wicker placemats and coasters; use white to emulate snow.

           3. Around the fireplace…

Besides your festive table, other focal points around the home shouldn’t be ignored. A fine example, should you have one, is using your fireplace or mantelpiece to add your romantic candlelight. Shelving above and around the fireplace is simply perfect for displaying candlesticks, tealights and small votives, a simple but impactful way of maximising that cosy feeling without compromising on space. Use symmetry to achieve the perfect eye catching effect, and differing heights around the fireplace will send the eye on a pleasing journey from left to right.

Mirrors are the perfect, if often overlooked addition to Christmas and winter lighting. The reflections they cast from candles and lanterns help bounce the light around the room. Add glass tealights or glass candlesticks for a magnified effect, and the use of different coloured glass will add a beautiful array of colours to your home.

           4. Festive gifting

Finding the perfect gift for that special someone can sometimes seem like a difficult task. Give a gift of candlelight with our extensive range of candle lanterns, candlesticks and tealight holders; timeless accessories which add romantic mood lighting to any part of the home both indoors and outside. Light up a life at Christmas with a beautiful wooden lantern or decorative candle lantern to help make their day extra special.

If you’re looking for something for the garden, then also consider oil torches and oil lamps. Differing from candlelight in the fact that they use oil to burn, they are a great alternative to candlelight as they are more wind resistant when outdoors, and cast the garden in a warm, inviting glow. Solar lighting is also great for alternatives to traditional garden lighting, as they only need the power of the sun to charge. They are all great for garden lovers!

           5. Tips for candle safety and care

Make your candles last longer by storing them in a cool, dry place. This will make them burn slower, allowing you to use them for longer without replacing them. This can also prevent candles leaning or leaking a lot of wax when lit. Another way to help prevent drips is to gently press the edges of the candles inwards as they melt. Also consider trimming your wicks before use, as this can elongate the flame which will cause the candle to burn quicker and hotter, as well as becoming more of a fire risk. Once you’ve used a candle once, make sure to wipe any dust off to help stop them smoking when lit.

Lastly, candle safety should always be at the forefront of your mind when planning your winter candlelight arrangement and festive displays. Always place them on flat surfaces that are heat resistant, and make sure the room is well ventilated but away from open windows. Also keep the flame away from any flammable materials such as winter greenery, as well as small hands or paws. Always use a snuffer to extinguish a candle to prevent wax or sparks from spreading, as never leave a candle lit in an empty room.

  • How can I light my garden without electricity?

Garden lighting setting, with oil torches, fire pit and rattan chairs on flagstone floor patio. How can I light my garden without electricity?

We all love getting out in our gardens and outdoor spaces, and as summer begins to roll into autumn we start to think about how we can make the most of the shorter evenings and enjoy our outdoor spaces to the fullest, even once the sun’s gone down.

Often we get asked the best ways to light up the garden without having to go to the effort of installing wires and digging up the lawn, as well as the fact that mains electric lights can easily drain your budget and add extra costs to your electric bill. So today we thought we’d share a few ways to light up your garden without the need for electricity, and without breaking the bank.

An easy and low cost solution is the use of solar lighting. Self charging and therefore self sufficient, and sustainable, they use the power of the sun to charge during the day, so once they’ve been bought they pay for themselves and add a warm glow to your garden once the sun goes down. Automatic once it reaches dusk, there’s no need to turn them on, allowing for low maintenance and hassle free garden lighting.

Lightweight and easy to install, solar garden lights can be added to a wide variety of outdoor spaces. Place solar stake lights into the ground around borders and along pathways to add light to the lower parts of your garden with ease, and the fact that they are lightweight means that you can always move them somewhere else if needed.

Solar lanterns such as our Moroccan solar lantern can easily be hung from branches, hooks or pergolas to add some much needed height to your garden lighting, without having to install wires up the walls or along trellises. Suspend them above your seating areas and garden furniture to light up and create a romantic setting. Similarly, beautiful fairy lights such as Festoon lights are simply perfect for stringing around the garden, and add a festive vibe to your outdoor spaces for you and your guests to enjoy.

We’ve used candles and candle lanterns since the dawn of time to decorate the garden, and they certainly worked before the invention of electricity, so why not use them in our gardens? Wax candles are another low cost and low maintenance alternative to electric lights; they won’t run out of power until they’ve burnt out, and again cost you nothing once you’ve bought them. Add a dazzling outdoor candle lantern either in stunning stainless steel or timeless wood to stop the flame flicking out in the evening breeze, and the lanterns can be arranged in attractive groups using different heights, or display them around the garden for the perfect ambient mood lighting. Nothing says romance like a candle lantern, so make those home date nights special! Why not also use candlesticks and tealights on garden tables to add a little mood lighting to your seating areas too? Just make sure to take them inside once you’re done.

Similarly oil lamps are one of the oldest and most traditional ways to light up a space, and since the ancient Egyptians we’ve used oil lamps and oil torches to create light in the darkness. Although technology has advanced considerably since then, oil burners are still a great way to light up a garden space on a relatively low budget, with the burners running on torch oil rather than electricity. We love using Citronella torch oil, which has the added bonus of helping to keep those troublesome insect pests away from your garden parties and outdoor soirees. Oil lamps are great for putting on an outdoor table whilst oil torches can be placed around the garden on poles that can be staked into flower beds or grass, or you can use an oil torch base to place them on hard surfaces. Alternatively gel lamps are another great option to oil lamps, and use gel oil rather than torch oil to burn.

If you’re at all concerned about the outside temperatures at night then we’ve got you covered! Fire pits are a great low budget option for heating outdoors, without literally burning a hole in your pocket. Simple but effective; they use logs as a power source and are much cheaper to run than patio heaters and throw out just as much heat, with the added bonus of romantic light from a flickering flame. Place them on a patio or an outdoor seating area, and keep you and your guests toasty warm long into the evening. Why not toast marshmallows or s’mores whilst you relax? The glow of the firepit will also help keep you illuminated, and why not use them in conjunction with lanterns, oil torches or solar lights for the ultimate garden lighting ambience.

However you decide to do it; we guarantee that you’ll be able to find a fun and cost effective way to light up your gardens without spending a fortune. So hopefully you’ll never have to ask again; how do I light my garden without electricity? If you have any further questions then feel free to drop us a message HERE. Bring your garden to life without electricity, and create a setting that you can revisit time and time again, no matter the season.

  • Garden Seating Ideas – Making the most of a small garden

    rattan garden seating

If you’re anything like us then you love to spend time outside on those warm summer days, whether it’s socialising with friends or quietly relaxing with a good book.

Research suggests that the colours blue and green are great for mental health, so there really is no better stress relief than using our gardens and outdoor spaces to relax and unwind after a long day, or on a weekend.

Creating a snug yet satisfying garden space can be easily achieved whether you have a small garden patio or a larger outdoor space to work with. Suitable and comfortable garden furniture is often the centre of this; whether it’s a cosy wooden armchair that you can recline and enjoy a glass of wine, a garden bench for your favourite corner of the patio, or a large dining table for alfresco dining and socialising with friends. There are many ways that different outdoor furniture can be used to your advantage, no matter what the size of your outdoor living space.

Today we discuss ways to make use of smaller outdoor areas to create an ideal seating area.

How do you create a seating area in a small garden?

Small gardens can be so cosy and inviting; all you need is to be clever with your space and think carefully about what you will use it for.

Consider making your outdoor space an area that meets your daily needs; would you like a nice area for friends to sit and socialise, to eat dinner and most importantly for you to relax? Some people even like to do office work outdoors, so in this case something comfortable and possibly under cover would be a good option.

Garden benches are perfect for narrow spaces, although can be often overlooked; a great place to enjoy your morning cup of tea, alfresco breakfast and chats with friends. Our selection of garden benches are all handmade with solid wood. Our favourite Za Za bench for space saving is the wooden folding bench which is handmade in teak wood and small in size, you can simply fold away when not being used.

Compact dining has become very important for small areas, consider dining tables that can be extended and then reduced in size when required. Or rather than a dining table, coffee tables can be a great space saving idea for casual dining. We have designed our NEW garden dining set with wooden benches, which can be placed right underneath the table when not being used; always a clever way to save some space. Choose from the four or six seater outdoor dining set.

Outdoor chairs are often a necessity for any garden space and make handy extra seating for alfresco entertaining and outdoor dinner parties. If you fancy something to lounge in yet can also be pulled up to a table, our bamboo and string chairs are perfect for this. All in stylish yet practical designs. It can also be a good idea to choose something which can also go inside the conservatory or hallway, making it a practical all year round seating option. Our teak and rattan lounger chairs are both comfortable and relaxing seating for both indoors and outside the home.

It is now popular to build alfresco seating areas around a source of lighting or heat and really sets the scene once the sun goes down. If space is limited, adding a small fire pit can be the perfect way to do this.

If you’re watching the pennies, and looking for garden seating ideas on a budget, another idea is to also try building your own outdoor furniture, if you fancy the challenge! The trend of self building pallet gardens to create pallet benches and sofas is still a favourite.

  • What is the difference between wicker and rattan?

Wicker garden armchair outside on grass with book

Wicker furniture is something that we’re all familiar with, and something that a lot of us have in our homes, either in the form of wicker chairs and stools, wicker baskets, rugs or wicker benches and tables. It is a versatile method allowing for both indoor furniture and outdoor patio furniture to be easily created. But at first glance it may not be completely obvious as to what wicker actually is, or what it is made from.

    What is wicker?

Did you know that the term “wicker” does not refer to the materials used to make the products, but instead to the actual process of making the products? If not then you wouldn’t be alone, so today we thought that we would share some interesting facts on the wonderful world of wicker. We even discovered something new ourselves!

    How is wicker made?

Wicker is the oldest known method of furniture creation in history, with records dating as far back as the Egyptians weaving baskets over 5000 years ago. This method favoured the abundant reed and swamp grasses found on the banks of the Nile, but more modern methods prefer other materials such as willow, rattan, bamboo, seagrass and water hyacinth. You can find more about SEAGRASS and WATER HYACINTH on our blogs (HERE). In the UK the method can also be referred to as “wickerwork” or “rushwork”.

    What is Rattan?

Rattan as a material has over 600 species, but most are found in the tropical regions of Africa, Asia and Australia, and the rattan itself is a species of palm, known for its sustainability and ease of growing. It has fleshy stalks where the fibres are obtained. It is sought after because it is strong, flexible, resistant, and very eco friendly.

    What we love about wicker?

We always adore the natural woody and earthy shades that wicker displays so beautifully. They can be used in a wide range of settings and appeal to many aesthetics. Our lovely wicker bar stools attract a lot of attention and are a great addition to both modern and more traditional looking kitchens; with their white washed finish and neutral tones. Additionally our seagrass rattan bar stools are another comfy alternative for the kitchen and dining space, and add that little extra charm and character to the room they sit in.

If you’re venturing outside then another of our favourites are our rattan garden armchairs. Made with a combination of teak wood and rattan, this wicker garden furniture makes stylish seating that’s sure to get your guests talking! We also love how relaxing they are to sit in whilst soaking up the summer sun…

  • Caring for your chopping board

How to care for your chopping board

One of our best selling collections is our extensive range of chopping boards and serve ware. However we often get asked for the best ways of caring for them and keeping them looking fresh and healthy. So today we have a few tips about how to use your new chopping board.

It is generally quite easy to look after our marble, slate and wooden chopping boards as they are very durable and excellent for presenting foods. They are great when used as serving and cheese boards, and are a beautiful addition when displayed in the kitchen area. CLICK HERE to view our full range of chopping boards…

Marble chopping boards are not as porous, with no gaps or creases, so they on the whole do not absorb meat juices and liquids. This makes them extremely good for avoiding the spread of bacteria. Marble is a solid material which makes them very durable, but do be careful when using sharp knives on these boards as it can blunt them.

Both wooden and slate chopping boards are much more porous than marble. To protect the slate and wood parts of your chopping board and prevent them from absorbing juices from foods, it is always a good idea to treat them with a food grade mineral oil, or recommended chopping board oil a few times a year. This will help to protect the integrity of the materials, protect against contamination, staining and add that extra special shine to the surface.

To clean we recommend washing our boards by hand. Simply wash with hot water and soap. Make sure all food is wiped off and then leave to dry. Try to avoid getting any rubber feet underneath wet. We do not advise that you put them in the dishwasher as this can damage or even break the boards!

  • New Year, New You…

With Christmas fading quickly into the distance, it can leave us a little deflated now January is here. At Za Za Homes we’re always looking for new and innovative ways to keep our homes looking fresh, and keeping the dynamic appeal that we all adore. We’ve got five TOP TIPS to help you revitalise your home and give the New Year a new YOU!

1, Make your New Year simpler by creating dedicated spaces for your clothing, accessories and useful everyday items. This will also help to clear any clutter and make that spring clean a little easier. Think big with wardrobe space in order to keep the bedroom tidy, and use hanging space on walls for those smaller areas without compromising on aesthetics.

2, If you’re like us then you’ll probably have acquired some greenery over the festive period. Things from Christmas trees, to wreathes, to garlands are all a common occurrence around the holidays, but this doesn’t have to mean that they all have to be thrown away with the wrapping paper! Make your green indoor spaces a permanent fixture by adding baskets and indoor planters with a variety of characterful, warming and soothing plants; not only are they lovely to look at, but are almost guaranteed to give your mood that extra lift when you need it!

3, Sideboards are an attractive yet practical way to remove extra clutter from your homes, leaving everything feeling neat, tidy and ready for a new year ahead. Use them as drinks cabinets to keep bottles from being easily seen, or for extra linen and towels. They also make very attractive centrepieces to any room, and can act as a focal point for you to build the rest of your décor around.

4, Those cosy festive lights that we all enjoyed can actually be a permanent feature at home. Lanterns especially are a great addition to both the house and the garden, and look fabulous even when they are not lit, as they make great statement pieces. Oil lamps and torches are also a great outdoor addition and can offer wonderful external lighting after dark. Don’t let January feel dark and dingy when you can use candlelight to brighten your rooms and your day!

5, If all those gifts from Santa are beginning to clog up your children’s rooms, then baskets, boxes under beds and pouches behind doors are all great space saving tips! Use colours and styles that suit their room décor, so they blend into the room with ease. If you’ve only got a small space then boxing up some of the toys and rotating them is a great way of saving space without your children getting bored!

  • Winter Dining Experience

Dining Table and Chairs with Candle Holder, place settings and lantern

So it’s that time of year again; the nights are drawing ever inward and nature is slowly falling asleep. As we head towards the ever-decreasing temperatures as the landscape is covered by winter’s frosty gown, we turn our attention to making our homes as cosy as possible, and planning how to add that extra cheer and glamour to our festive dining experience.

Today we are sharing some photos captured in customer Sarah’s country cottage home based in Somerset. She has chosen a selection of Za Za items to create a snug winter table setting that can’t help but invite you in! It is lovely to make dinner time more eventful during these colder and shorter evenings, and there are some great ideas here that can also make your Christmas table setting more special!  (More details about the individual items can be found at the end of this blog).

When it comes to your dining table you can easily add character with decorative placemats, try mixing different textures such as natural wood and wicker. When guests are invited, why not match with handmade place names to add that personal touch? Complete the look with an array of coasters, whether they be matching and comformative, or different in style and ‘rogue’, with each having a personality of their own. Set everything off by adding a decorative linen tablecloth and stylish napkins to soften the decor.

It’s important to remember how you are planning on serving your festive feasts. Serving boards are an excellent way to add that extra dimension of height and depth, whether it be a stylish wooden cheeseboard, or an elegant marble serving platter. Serve your guests in style with Christmas canapes or tapas in individual bowls so that everyone gets a fair share, and makes transporting your feasts that much easier.

Candlelight on a table spread is something that should never be overlooked! Use height as a space saver to allow more food and drink on the table, as well as casting a lovely ambient glow onto your surroundings. To liven the festive atmosphere, make the most of every available surface to add a warm and inviting glow; from tealights on the mantelpiece to large lanterns decorating the available floor space. Optimise your space wherever possible!

Of course you don’t have to use real candles if you have young hands or furry paws around the house. Battery powered lights and candles can be a go-to alternative, and of course you don’t have to clean up any wax! No need to keep replacing the candles either, as all you’ll need are new batteries once in a while…

There is nothing more spectacular than a festive table centrepiece. For those who have a knack for gardening or floristry then using natural greenery from the garden is an excellent way to add that extra dimension and colours to your dining experience. Alternatively, you can also use faux plants and flowers that have the added bonus of not wilting and can last all year round. Foliage doesn’t have to be confined to the table however, as it can be used all around the home. Create garlands along your mantlepiece or have vases of festive flowers on shelves and dressers. Holly, mistletoe and evergreens are all good options; just remember to keep them away from any naked flames!

Most importantly, the dining table needs some delicious food to turn the beautiful setting into an occasion! We love festive food, so we’ve compiled a few of our favourite recipes from local businesses and BBC Good Food to get you inspired for the festive season. Darts Farm has a great addition to your Christmas Dinner experience (CLICK HERE), whilst BBC Good Food has inspiration for a divine Christmas Cake that you are sure to love (CLICK HERE)!

  • Za Za Goes to Looe

We were recently invited to kit out a beautiful holiday home in Looe, Cornwall, with an array of exciting Za Za products. Zara herself went along to help with the set up. The owners wanted a concept that worked well with their nautical location but keeping it neutral, natural & stylish.

The kitchen was easily Zara’s favourite part of the house and we loved adding the finishing touches, including the mango wood kitchen stools, rattan dining chairs and beautifully made chopping boards; all adding a practical yet rustic twist to a contemporary kitchen space!

Other rooms that received the Za Za treatment were the bedrooms and living room, where we waved our magic with a variety of wooden and wicker items, from our stylish carved headboard to the popular lounger chairs and jute rugs.

Home owners – “We chose the carved headboards in natural and white for the bedrooms. They go so well with the wood floors and other natural accessories.”

Whilst in Looe Zara also did some exploring! Visiting Looe Island was a personal favourite; walking around the private island whilst soaking up the sea views and nature. Sampling the many locally caught fish on offer in the town is also a must, whilst enjoying the stunning scenery and local beaches.

  • How to light a gel lamp

Today, here is a handy step by step guide for you on how to light your gel lamp safely.

You can also view our interactive “how to” video here.

    – STEP 1 –

Fill the dish in the centre of your gel lamp carefully, roughly 2/3 capacity with a good quality outdoor gel oil. Here we are using Firedragon.

    – STEP 2 –

To ignite the flame carefully place a long lit match or lighter so it comes into contact with the gel fuel, taking care not to burn yourself!

    – STEP 3 –

Enjoy the lovely glow that your gel lamp now creates!

    – STEP 4 –

To extinguish, simply place the provided snuffer over the flame.

You can wear safety gloves for extra protection.

Leave the gel lamp to cool before moving.

Top Tip – The lamp can get rather warm,  so it can be good practice to place a heat resistant mat under your lamp to avoid marks on your table.

  • Spring Tips

Now that winter is finally beginning to thaw and the days are becoming warmer and longer, we once again draw our attention to spring. Yay!

At Za Za Homes we love to see the spring flowers come into bloom, and reminds us of all the natural materials we use in our products. Today we wanted to offer a few ideas about how to freshen up the home.

1.) Natural textures and wood grains look great in any home and can complement a wide range of aesthetics and styles, but if you’re looking for a specific shade then there is always the option to use chalk and water-based paints to create your own unique look. For example; our mango wood Ellie sideboard looks great in its natural colour, but also great in a rich navy blue which makes a striking accent feature for any room! Lighter natural shades of wood can bring warmth and light to a darker toned wall.

2.) Rugs can be a great way to add colour to a room too, without compromising on precious living space. Whether as a focal point or as a design accessory we love how they can breathe a little extra life into a room.

3.) When it comes to outdoor spaces you can easily add a little beauty with a variety of candle lanterns and oil torches. Not only do they act as a talking point for your guests, but add that little bit of extra ambient lighting once the sun goes down, allowing you to enjoy your outdoor spaces no matter the time of day.

4.) Flowers and plants are such a simple and yet effective way to add colour and life to any room. Use plant stands to add extra height, especially great for entranceways and to decorate empty corners of the room.

  • All About Mango Wood

We’ve always had a strong ethos of using sustainable materials where possible, so today we thought we’d share some information on how our mango wood products are produced, and where this replenishable product comes from.

A slightly darker hardwood which has beautiful grains and natural patterns, you will see that many of our lanterns and some furniture pieces have been lovingly handmade with mango wood.

Mango trees grow and mature very quickly in comparison to many other trees, reaching full productivity and maturity in roughly 15 years. The mango plantations only harvest the trees for wood when the fruit stops growing or the trees reach their maximum growth point. Once this is done, new trees are then planted in their place. This means that the mango trees are therefore readily available, a by-product to mango fruit, thus eco friendly. A huge benefit is that this also provides further jobs and income for the farmers and an affordable, good quality material for the manufacturers.

  • Storage Style

If you’re already preparing for the annual spring clean, then we’ve got some great space saving ideas for your home. There are a variety of different ways to save on space whilst also making your homes look even more fabulous!

You can use the top hooks of a towel ladder to hang bags and jewellery as well as a range of other useful or decorative items.

Why not use an open wardrobe or a stylish wooden coat hook to store your guests’ clothes? They’re really effective and look great too! Add height to create extra hanging space.

Another great way to save on space is to use baskets around the home to store a whole range of items. Not only are they great at storing all that clutter that you’d rather your guests not see, but they also make stylish accessories for any room! They can also be stored on top of wardrobes or on shelves to save floor space.

A bench with shelving adds extra storage without taking up extra footprint space in smaller environments like a hallway; perfect for shoes, slippers and magazines!

    Happy January!

  • Today we discuss Water Hyacinth

We’ve always had a strong ethos of using sustainable materials where possible, so today we thought we’d share some information on how our Water Hyacinth products are produced, and where this replenishable product comes from.

Water hyacinth is a floating aquatic plant with round bright green and purple leaves. It is very fast growing, meaning it spreads quickly and often takes over surrounding ponds.

The plant has become a problem for the aquatic environment and because there is so much of it. With this in mind, we have decided to turn a challenge into an advantage by using this plant to create some of our beautiful products.

This plant is soft and flexible, and through the process of drying and weaving, beautiful rugs, storage baskets and furniture can be made. Local craftsmen are given the opportunity to use this plant, turning it into products to sell and therefore creating jobs.

We are pleased to be part of this process as we supply several of these unique handmade finished products; including wicker baskets, placemats, bedroom & bar stools and coffee tables.

If there is anything in particular you would like to know about our products please do get in contact with us.

  • How to light your garden oil torch

Tall black garden torches oil torch

As we are reaching that time of year when people start venturing out into the garden we thought it would be a good time to share our knowledge on caring for your garden oil torch.

For those of you who are new to garden oil lamps or have just purchased one for the garden, here are a few how to’s for you.

These instructions are generally based on the use of our garden torches. But can be used as a rough guideline for others.

    STEP-BY-STEP OIL LAMP GUIDE

    1. To access the oil container, push down the metal wick holder and turn in an anticlockwise direction. Then simply fill with a suitable outdoor oil. Do not over fill the container as when oil heats it will expand slightly. Then screw the top back on. Allow the wick to soak for a minimum of 15 minutes. To ignite you can then simply place a lit match to the wick.
    2. To fuel the torch you will need some good quality oil – We recommend the selection of Barrettine lamp and torch oil. This is sold through our website.
    3. All of the staked oil lanterns come with a spike which can be placed into soft ground. If you have a patio or terrace you can also place the stake into an oil lamp stand. Our stands are made to fit all of our oil torches except the Lucca range.
    4. For each oil torch we have provided the oil capacity and estimated burn time on the website. If you are purchasing from elsewhere, read their product information or contact them directly.
    5. All of our oil lamps come with a snuffer to put out the flame and a filter to help pour the oil.
    6. If the wick gets wet this will affect the flame’s ability to burn.
    7. It is always best to put the snuffer over the wick when the lamp is not in use to protect it from rain and damp.

Our illuminating range of high quality outdoor oil lamps and torches will add a special glow to any occasion whether it be a wedding, dinner, event or simply a relaxing evening in the garden. They are all made from high quality stainless steel or copper making them strongly durable for outdoor use.

Remember to be careful when using the oil torches, keeping the flame away from children and placing them securely in the ground or using a strong oil torch base.

  • How to look after your rustic coffee table

Any rustic wood coffee table is easy on the eye, such an attractive focal piece for any room. The fact that each of our pieces are unique is wonderful and such a talking point with house guests.

We often have customers asking how to treat their industrial tree trunk coffee tables. Generally our first question is to ask how you would like to the table to look? Would you like a shine, a rich colour in the wood, or a natural look?

Our industrial coffee tables are generally delivered untreated (please check) . If you like a natural look and are happy for a few stains to appear from mugs and so on then we say you can leave the table as it is. However, by treating your table with an oil treatment, every few months, this will help to protect the wood from stains and also protect the integrity of the wood itself. If you fancy adding just a nice shine to the wood, coconut oil is a nice way to do this.

Live edge tables can change and move slightly with time, factors such as the temperature of the environment and sunlight can effect this. We always recommend people adding any wood treatment underneath the table before adding it to the top so that you can make sure they are happy with the final result.

We always recommend using a coaster and mats when placing drinks and plates on the table. Any wet spills can leave marks on the wood so we recommened wiping away with a damp cloth and then a dry cloth immediately.

Live edge coffee tables are an excellent way to add a unique twist to the living space, have a browse here to see our range.

  • How to take care of your chopping boards

    marble and wood cheese board

We often have customers asking us how they should care for their chopping and serving boards. So today we thought we would share a bit of knowledge we have picked up along the way.

It is generally quite easy to look after our marble and slate cutting boards as they are very durable and excellent for presenting foods. Great used as serving and cheese boards, plus they look beautiful when displayed in the kitchen area.

Marble chopping boards are non porous, with no gaps or creases, so they do not absorb meat juices and liquids. This makes them extremely good for avoiding the spread of bacteria. Marble is a very solid material which is great, but do be careful when using sharp knives on these boards as it can blunt them.

Both wooden chopping boards and slate serving boards are much more porous than marble. To protect the slate and wood parts of your chopping board and prevent them from absorbing juices from foods, it is always a good idea to treat them with a food grade mineral oil, or recommended chopping board oil, a few times a year. This will help to protect the integrity of the materials, protect against contamination, staining and add that extra special shine to the boards.

To clean we recommend washing our boards by hand. Simply wash with hot water and soap. Make sure all food is wiped off and then leave to dry. Try to avoid getting the rubber feet underneath wet.

Browse our Za Za chopping board range here. They make excellent Christmas gifts!

Watch out for Cher’s entrance and also the Fernando song where you can see our stunning torches make an appearance. Get the look here.
